Dr Sophie Nicholls – Speech Therapist

  • Club Taree 121 Wingham Road Taree, NSW, 2430 Australia (map)

Our February Speaker – Dr Sophie Nicholls:

Dr Sophie Nicholls has always dreamed of being a speech pathologist but her path to achieving this has been circuitous to say the least. Along the way and in advance of gaining her Masters in Speech Pathology, she dabbled in Chemical Engineering, and then collected a BA (Hons), a University Medal, a PhD due to her extensive research of Aboriginal languages in Arnhem Land, post-doctoral work at UWS’s ARC Centre for Excellence for the Dynamics of Language, a husband and three children!

Sophie was born in the Manning Valley and attended Wingham High School. Around seven years ago, after having lived and worked in different parts of Australia as well as overseas, Sophie – together with her family – returned to live and work in the Manning. She has also brought with her a huge range of skills and experiences from which our community is greatly benefitting.

Sophie will tell us a little of this journey towards becoming a speech pathologist. We’ll also find out more about this high demand profession, difficulties of studying it, and how it helps people of all ages with, for example, communication needs and swallowing needs.
