We are back for hopefully a full program for 2022. The first half is looking very exciting, beginning with Dr Kathryn Jeanes.
This month, Kathy will speak about her work in fine art and Australian colonial history, and the linking of these through her Fine Art PhD research - as she herself explains:
“My art practice encompasses a background in textiles, photography, artist books and installations. My engagement with our colonial history led to a passion for creating a contemporary archive of artist books and materials to link three heritage listed sites where young marginalised girls were incarcerated.
Biloela: afore and beyond
My Fine Art PhD research and exhibitions aim to further the ongoing discussion relating to gaps in Australia’s history of girls incarceration, 1867-1901. The exploration of Biloela Industrial School and the Reformatory School on Cockatoo Island, the Newcastle Military Barracks and the Parramatta Industrial School, promotes awareness and makes a contribution through reparative art.“
Her work aims to shed some light on this largely unrecorded period of incarceration of “wayward” working class girls, and the traumas they experienced.
