Professor Jenny May AM - Adventures in rural health

  • Wingham Services Club 28-38 Bent Street Wingham Australia (map)

From Jenny: “Jenny May is a GP and Director of the University of Newcastle Department of rural health. She was born and raised in Sydney moving rural 40 years ago with one of the strongest predictors of professional rural location-spousal origin!!! She has worked in remote, rural and regional locations as part of a health care team with her husband Pete and three children who have long since left! She has some great experiences of the positivity of regional communities and how we undervalue it in talking to prospective health professionals.”

Jenny also maintains a role in a not-for-profit GP practice in the New England region, including visiting rights at local public and private hospitals. She has worked all over Australia and in Canada. Professor May’s teaching and mentoring roles, as well as multiple committee and advocacy group involvements, have all had a Rural Health focus. Her work has also led to her being appointed a member of the Order of Australia (AM) and The Telstra’s Rural Doctors Association of Australia (RDAA) Rural Doctor of the Year 2014.
